Blackpool Grand A Charity -130 Years In The Making!

Blackpool Grand Theatre was delighted to receive listed building consent to further our capital masterplan ambitions. Securing relevant permissions and the development of architectural plans to RIBA Stage 3 are foundational aspects of many major grant applications, such as the current round of Arts Council England capital funding, for which Blackpool Grand Theatre has been invited to apply by 3rd October. Remedial works to the roof and west wall are dependent on securing c£500k funding and would see the completion of a project paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, returning currently unused areas of the building to public use.

In common with many historic buildings of architectural significance, Blackpool Grand Theatre commissions quinquennial condition and structural surveys to help prioritise a phased programme of restoration works to ensure that visitors and staff can continue to enjoy the town’s celebrated Frank Matcham asset for generations to come. This most recent project forms part of Blackpool Grand’s broader capital masterplan, which will, in the long-term include restoration of the Church Street façade and improved multi-level public access to the Matcham auditorium, Studio, event spaces, dressing rooms and offices as well as enhanced retail and customer circulation spaces. In the shorter-term we are furthering plans to install elegant external lighting solutions and undertake improvements to existing shopfronts as part of our commitment to enhancing the experience of visiting central Blackpool.

Chief Executive, Adam Knight, said: “We recognise the significant investment required to achieve these ambitions. Securing necessary permissions to undertake works to the roof and west wall to enable us to apply for a much-needed Arts Council England capital grant is just the first step in realising an overall package of c£10-£15m of capital projects”.

Working alongside renowned industry advisors, including theatre conservation specialist Dr. David Wilmore and the Theatres Trust, Blackpool Grand Theatre looks forward to opportunities where local people can have the opportunity to play their part in supporting the capital masterplan ambitions.
