The Theatres Trust

The Theatres Trust promotes the value of theatre buildings across the United Kingdom and champions their future.

The Theatres Trust is the National Advisory Public Body for Theatres, protecting theatres for everyone. The Trust works with commercial, public, subsidised and voluntary sectors to secure a sustainable future for theatre buildings. Its aim is to ensure that current and future generations have access to good quality theatres that reflect our rich cultural heritage and offer inspiring new environments in which to enjoy theatre.

Providing leadership and strategic thinking, The Theatres Trust advises in planning, regeneration and development, architecture and design, heritage, and theatre. It enables better planning to secure, improve and achieve sustainability for new and existing theatre buildings and protect theatre use.

It is best known for its work as a statutory consultee in the planning system. Before granting permission for ‘development affecting any land upon which there is a theatre’ a local planning authority is required to consult The Theatres Trust.

The Trust is always happy to discuss plans for theatre developments in their early stages and to offer advice and visit projects. It also offers a range of resources, including Events, Theatres Magazine, Advice Notes and information on theatres in the UK. It can also respond to individual enquiries and requests.

Over the next few months The Trust will be introducing a new range of online services to the website. These will include a theatre planning applications register, and a range of resources including our theatres database and theatres image library.

You can find out more about their work last year by downloading a copy of their 29th Annual Report 2006 (2.4 MB).
