Olympic fever was soaring on Friday 10 August- our women’s hockey team won a bronze medal against New Zealand rivals and Team GB’s Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark bagged silver in the sailing. There was another big medal win on Friday… Matcham Monkey’s bronze win at the Blackpool Mascot Games!!!

The much anticipated Mascot Games took place on Friday 10 August in St Johns Square- and what a day for it! Onlookers watched on from their deckchairs as the Blackpool Mascots fought to snatch the gold in this year’s Mascot Games. The Grand Theatre’s Matcham Monkey has been training for weeks at the Imperial Hotel gym to prepare himself for the big day! After a heroic attempt to beat the likes of Shakey Shark from the Sealife Centre and Mr Bling and Mr Ballulah from Sandcastle Waterpark,  Matcham Monkey managed to bag bronze, whilst Jungle Jim from Blackpool Tower walked away with first place.

You can also see Matcham Monkey being his mischievous self at The Grand’s free family fun day, which will be held on Wednesday 29 August at 11am-2pm at Stanley Park’s bandstand.  All the stars of this year’s pantomime Cinderella will be there to meet you! Emmerdale’s Danny Miller, Channel 5’s Milkshake! presenter Amy Thompson, Grand Theatre favourite Steve Royle and Radio Wave’s very own Hayley Kay! There are lots of exciting things to do, such as facepainting, a bouncy castle, Blackpool Zoo’s Creepy Crawly Roadshow and not forgetting an appearance from Matcham Monkey himself! What’s more, the cast of Cinderella will be arriving at the bandstand by boat from across Stanley Park’s boating lake!…Oh yes they will!
