Kick off your festival fun at Blackpool’s Grand on Saturday 13th February with a night of extraordinary variety and musical entertainment. Variety Notes is hosted by the highly-talented housewife superstar Mrs Barbara Nice (fresh from her hit Edinburgh Fringe show and having supported Johnny Vegas & Peter Kay). Variety Notes also includes the musical genius of Frisky & Mannish, sex-symbol Earl Okin, the gyrating hips of Elvis the Hula Boy and lots more.
Strength, agility and visual brilliance roll into one as Ockham’s Razor return to Blackpool (previously seen in out2dance), with a stunning new piece of aerial theatre – The Mill on Tuesday 16th February. Experience the sweat, grind and grit of physical work in a wheel of wood and steel which is powered by the performers and suspended 6 metres in the air. Breathtaking stuff!
Spymonkey’s Moby Dick on Wednesday 17th & Thursday 18th February is a glorious mis-telling of the Herman Melville novel. Four actors find themselves trapped in the belly of a literary monster. As they ponder the irony of their fate they recount the story, sparkling with their own fantastical flourishes. The novel’s epic examination of good, evil, fate and obsession is lost on them. And then, mysteriously, found on them again. Will Ahab’s thirst for revenge be unhinged by the well-meaning but staggeringly inept attentions of his crew? Now that he has found true love, is Ishmael still fated to be the sole survivor of the Pequod? Can a mermaid figurehead get pregnant? And what does a cannibal harpoonist from Bavaria eat?
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain has collaborated with British Film Institute’s National Archive to find a host of unusual and little-seen gems from the early days of silent film, and sculpted them into Ukelelescope - a delightfully eclectic evening of music, film, comedy and pathos on Saturday 20th February. This mixed bill combines a variety of short films, clips and adverts, all of this, of course, presented in the Orchestra’s own inimitable style, and set to a programme of original and carefully chosen old favourites from musical history.
Blackpool’s Grand will also be holding a World Behind The Scenes theatre tour on Thursday 18th February exploring Frank Matcham’s theatrical masterpiece backstage and front of house.
