LUXURIA
In the Middle of the Moment
Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) creates new dance theatre by both leading and emerging UK and International choreographers. With 10 highly-skilled, committed dancers and a highly acclaimed repertoire that pushes boundaries and expectations, they want to move, challenge, entertain and delight you!
In a specially commissioned piece directed by award winning choreographer Adam Benjamin, the company expands its cast to include four disabled performers from around the world.
Angels of Incidence by Adam Benjamin
Angels of Incidence is an extraordinary, inspirational new work created for SDT by award-winning choreographer & co-founder of CandoCo dance company, Adam Benjamin. For Angels, SDT has expanded from its usual company of 10 dancers to 14 – including 4 international guest dancers with disability. Angels of Incidence opens us up to a world of unheralded encounters, where a chance meeting can change the direction of our lives – from the ordinary into the impossible, the mundane into the majestic. This is life seen through the eyes of angels. The four guest dancers are Caroline Bowditch (from Australia but UK based), Dan Daw (Australian), Cornelia Kip Lee (USA) and Michael King (England). Several of the guest performers use wheelchairs. The piece uses various pieces from Bach as well as original music by Adrian Freedman. Adam’s work has been described as ‘beautifully crafted…performed with grace and expertise…’ The Tonight, South Africa (Second Time Broken by Adam Benjamin).
LUXURIA by Liv Lorent
Liv Lorent created this work for SDT in 2004. Since then it has become a signature piece for SDT and won the company a Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2005. The hauntingly beautiful work is from one of Britain’s hottest young choreographers, Liv Lorent. The Artistic Director of ballet LORENT, Liv last year won The Arts Foundation Choreography Award, and has recently created work for the BalletBoyz. LUXURIA is an overwhelming of the senses – romantic, passionate, sensual - in terms of the movement, the music and the overall feel of the piece. Costumes for the girls are huge billowing hoop dresses, and green crinoline with tassels hanging off for the boys.
In the Middle of the Moment by Uri Ivgi and Johan Greben
This work is part of an ongoing collaboration between SDT and Scotland’s most lauded chamber group, The Hebrides Ensemble. Choreographic (and life) partners Johan Greben and Uri Ivgi have created a duet that looks at relationships in confined spaces.
With the whole piece fitting inside a small square of light on stage, the work is danced by James MacGillivray and Victoria Roberts (a real-life couple) and in some venues Ruth Janssen and Michal Zahora.
In 2003, SDT won the Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Repertoire (Modern). They also invest in the exploring and platforming of new work arising from within the company and supports the development of the next generation of choreographers. They share their passion and understanding of dance through residencies and an education programme that reaches everyone from beginner to professional.
