Hundreds of families flocked to the Grand Theatre’s enchanting ‘Giant Peach Orchard’ at the Tiny Worlds Family Day in Stanley Park on Saturday 6 July to join in with the activities on offer, which included making tiny insects out of clay, creating wings and insect antenna headdresses and a giant ladybird search to find ten hidden ladybirds around the orchard.

Artist Cath Moran transformed the wooded area next to the Stanley Park Cafe by hanging dozens of beautiful Giant Peaches made from Willow and orange tissue paper. The theatre is hoping to use the peaches in an art installation at the Grand Theatre later in the year.

Families were guided into the orchard by a Ukulele playing worm and a dancing cockroach! The Grand Theatre gave away over 300 free peaches on the scorching hot day and has heralded the day as a huge success.

The theatre made the decision to create a ‘Giant Peach Orchard’ to link with Birmingham Stage Company’s production of James and The Giant Peach, which is coming to The Grand from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 5 October 2013.   James and the Giant Peach was Roald Dahl’s very first children’s book and one of his most popular stories.

This classic book tells the story of James, a lonely young boy who lives with Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, the most revolting Aunts in England. They make him work and slave and never let him play with other children. Then one day he meets a mystical old man who gives him a bag that contains the strongest magic the world has ever known.

When James spills the bag near an old peach tree, the most incredible things start to happen and James embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with the most amazing group of characters you could ever meet! The Birmingham Stage Company are famous for their acclaimed productions of Roald Dahl stories. In their twenty year history they have staged six Roald Dahl books and many other children’s stories including The Jungle Book and Horrible Histories, the latter of which entertained thousands of children at the Grand Theatre in March this year.  If you’re looking for fruit-filled fun and wizzpopping wonders, then don’t miss this peach of a show!

You can see James and The Giant Peach at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre from Tuesday 2 to Saturday 5 October.
