This May, Blackpool Grand Theatre is breaking all the conventions!

Breakin’ Convention, the alternative festival of hip hop dance, theatre and culture returns to Blackpool Grand following its huge success in 2014.

The international festival is hitting the Fylde Coast again for one night only as part of a tour, led by Sadler’s Wells Theatre Company, which will visit only eight venues outside London.

Breakin’ Convention is a celebration of urban dance and culture that showcases artists and performers from around the world. Hosted and curated by the legendary hip hop theatre choreographer Jonzi D, it guarantees a night of jaw-dropping dance performances from some of the very best international and UK poppers, lockers, house dancers, b-boys and b-girls.

This year’s line-up is as big and bold as ever, featuring world champion b-boy crew The Ruggeds (Holland), experimental b-boys Iron Skulls (Spain), and leading streetdancer Antoinette Gomis (France).

The festival takes place in the main auditorium and venues within the theatre all in one evening, and also features local acts Urban Dance Project, Wingz Theatre Works – FY Wingz, Freefly Crew, B-girl Goldie Lox (FOH) and Chad Taylor Dance Company.

In addition, there will be DJs, graffiti art, workshops, freestyling and the opportunity for audiences to show off their own moves, plus much more, making Breakin’ Convention an unforgettable experience for all ages.

Andrew Howard, Grand Theatre Marketing Manager said,

“Breakin’ Convention is a great celebration of urban culture. Both young and old will find it hard not to be inspired by the amazingly talented dancers, DJs and artists who take part. Breakin’ Convention is all about challenging the stereotypes of modern urban culture and giving the Fylde’s youths something positive, meaningful and creative to aspire to. We guarantee you won’t see a more diverse mix of people in a grade II* listed theatre, which is a testament to the great talent on show and the vast amount of people who enjoy seeing something a little different in Blackpool.”

In the run-up to the event, The Grand will also be organising a range of free Breakin’ Convention activities taking place around Blackpool to promote the festival. Details will be available nearer the time via The Grand’s website, blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Breakin’ Convention comes to Blackpool Grand Theatre for one night only on Saturday 21 May. Tickets are available from blackpoolgrand.co.uk or by calling 01253 290190.
