Dracula Fact 1

Dracula is the antagonist of the Victorian gothic horror classic, “Dracula” by Bram Stoker, 1897. Stoker’s notes for the novel show that his original name for Dracula was Count Wampyr.

Bram Stoker had a lifelong huge interest in art, he was one of the founders of Dublin Sketching Club 1874.

In Romanian, Dracula is translated to ‘dragon’ and ‘devil’.

According to Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula had a heavy moustache, can only change himself at sunset, and only sleeps in sacred earth.

What killed Bram Stoker on 20 April 1912? Bring on the conspiracy theories… In Daniel Farson’s (his nephew) biography of Stoker’s he proposed the death certificate read ‘Locomotor Ataxy 6 months’ as the cause of death. A softened approach to saying the sexually transmitted disease, syphilis. His remains are located at Golders Green Crematorium in London.

Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft (with Bill Gates), paid an undisclosed ‘large’ amount for Stoker’s manuscript of the book. Eight days before the novel’s publication, Stoker released the stage play, which he had also written, at the Lyceum Theatre.

Dracula appeared just short of 300 films, making him the most-often portrayed character in film, just ahead of iconic detective Sherlock Holmes.

Dracula wasn’t the best seller you imagine today when first released. It sold well in 1897, however it didn’t quite fly off the shelves. It was outsold by Richard Marsh’s The Beetle.
