January Blues – The New Year is traditionally a time for new beginnings and optimistic thinking – but for some there can be a sharp dip in that positivity during the long, dark January nights.

In the US, these feelings are famously called the Holiday Blues and Blue Monday, which falls on 17 January this year, is said to be the most depressing day of the year…

But never fear! Blackpool Grand Theatre is here to help you beat those winter blues and sing right through the New Year with an amazing line-up of live music nights to lift the heart!

The Blue Monday date was first published in a press release under the name of Dr. Cliff Arnall, who was at the time a tutor at the Centre for Lifelong Learning, a Further Education centre attached to Cardiff University. Dr Arnall considered a range of factors when creating his famous formula – including emotional connectedness, levels of kindness, honesty and fun.

He also devised the mathematical formula for happiness as ‘K + C + P + (A5 x W) – EO’

(Full details in Editor’s Notes). Arnall himself now campaigns against the concept of Blue Monday via Twitter as he wants Blue Monday ‘to inspire people to take action and make bold life decisions.’

Take this good Doctor’s advice and book your seats now as Blackpool’s Grand hits the top of the charts with a full line-up of hitmakers ready to get your toes tapping with joy. We are lighting up January with four fantastic nights of live music! Which one will take your number one spot?

How Deep Is Your Love for the sensational sound of the Bee Gees?  You Win Again on Thursday 20 January is a non-stop tour through the legendary Gibb brothers’ songbook and includes all your favourites from Night Fever to Massachusetts and many, many more! This fabulously authentic production ensures the Gibb brothers’ incredible legacy of classic hit songs is well and truly Stayin’ Alive. We’re not Jive Talkin’!

The Man in Black is back as the Johnny Cash Roadshow Walks the Line back to the Grand on Sunday 23 January. The award-winning Clive John pays homage to Cash’s career with all the hits along-side some of the darker more atmospheric songs from the later American recordings. This is the only show to be endorsed by the Cash family and is an emotional journey through Cash’s legendary career.

The Grand’s glorious gig guide will also continue right throughout 2022 with something for every music lover:

Steve Steinman’s incredible Vampire’s Rock Ghost Train rides into The Grand on Friday 4 February with over 30 rock anthems in a spectacular show like no other; The Illegal Eagles bring a ‘masterclass in musicianship’ on Sunday 20 March as an all-star line-up brings the very best of The Eagles back catalogue; Seven Drunken Nights – The Story of The Dubliners returns on Wednesday 6 April with a hugely talented cast of musicians and singers and some good old Irish craic; 1950s heartthrob Marty Wilde rocks back the years in Dreamboats and Petticoats with his band The Wildcats on Sunday 22 May; The Red Hot Chilli Pipers blast into the Grand on Sunday 5 June with their groundbreaking fusion of traditional Scottish music and rock/pop anthems and eBay Eck! it’s the hilarious Lancashire Hot Pots on Saturday 9 July bringing an unbeatable night of music and laughs, and that’s just to name a few!

We are also looking to bring the sunshine back to your lives right through to 2023 with Sun Records The Concert on Sunday 23 April 2023! Celebrate 70 years from when the legendary record label was born that brought you Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Rufus Thomas and scores more rockin’ pioneers. Revisit the blessed recording studio where the distinctive sound was crafted from gospel, blues, hillbilly, country, boogie and western swing that would influence the world of music for generations to come.

Dr. Cliff Arnall has also said July 14 is the cheeriest day on the calendar thanks to a combination of good weather, long daylight hours and the start of the holidays!

That’s the perfect reason to keep the good times rolling…
