In collaboration with many of Blackpool’s event venues, including the iconic Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Grand Theatre has joined the Light It In Red (#LightItInRed) Campaign today (Mon 6 July). Many of the UK’s entertainment venues and outdoor event spaces will be turned red to shine a light on the crisis within the events industry during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Blackpool’s Grand CEO Ruth Eastwood said “From the start of the Coronavirus crisis (March 17, 2020), entertainment venues and events have been in complete lockdown. The pandemic has had such an effect and theatres will it seems have one of the slowest recoveries of almost any industry across the world. The Light It In Red campaign is about highlighting the broad range of venues and event spaces across Blackpool that are in danger of never coming back and the terrible loss that would be to our town our country and its rich cultural heritage.

We are delighted to join in solidarity and show our commitment to the many theatres and entertainment venues across the UK.”

The dynamic “creative sector”, which includes live entertainment, music, events, theatre, performance and the arts, generates around £110 billion annually (based on DCMS figures) for the UK economy and is known for its invention, passion, and flair. Currently, unlike other industries, there is no set date for live events, shows, festivals and performances, etc. to restart after the Covid-19 shut down.

Blackpool Grand Theatre joins Tower Blackpool Tower and other iconic buildings and venues across the country including: Royal Shakespeare Company, Brighton Palace Pier, Oxford Playhouse, Liverpool Playhouse Theatre, The Lowry, Theatre Clwyd, Leeds Playhouse, and the National Theatre.
