The Grand Theatre are thrilled to reveal four new shows for our 2017 dance program including the return of Breakin’ Convention, ‘Britain’s favorite choreographer’ Matthew Bourne presents Early Adventures, award-winning choreographer Gary Clarke presents COAL and lastly the legend Mark Murphy presents OUT OF THIS WORLD.

Andrew Howard, Marketing Manager said, ‘The Grand is committed to presenting top quality dance with our new program boasting an array of diverse choreographers and award-winning artists. From international break-dancers to extraordinary physical theatre, there is a dance spectacle for everyone!’

Sadler’s Wells groundbreaking international festival of hip hop dance theatre and culture, Breakin’ Convention, RETURNS earlier than planned to Blackpool in 2017! Hosted and curated by Jonzi D, the festival brings a phenomenal night of dance performances from the very best international and UK poppers, lockers, house dancers, b-boys and b-girls.

Another sheer innovative and entertaining piece – OUT OF THIS WORLD is genre-defying action packed theatre from acclaimed writer and director Mark Murphy. Set within a world of projected film and animation, it combines his signature mix of ground breaking aerial choreography, original text and explosive special effects in a show that is both intense psychological thriller and heart-rending medical drama.

‘Britain’s favourite choreographer’ – Matthew Bourne returns to his roots in Early Adventures, a program of hit pieces that launched Bourne’s career and saw the birth of the style, wit and pure entertainment that his company New Adventures brought to Swan Lake, The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and Sleeping Beauty. With designs by long-time collaborator, Lez Brotherston, Early Adventures forms part of the company’s 30th Anniversary celebrations.

Looking for something a little different? Marking the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/85 British Miners’ strike, award winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents COAL. Strong, powerful and emotive, COAL explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry unearthing the true nature and body wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten. Bringing together Clarke’s striking physical language performed by a company of seven stunning professional dancers, a local community cast of women and a live brass band, COAL is an emotional, moving and ever-relevant exploration of community, solidarity and survival.

Don’t forget… The Grand is yet to host two amazing dance shows this November.

James Wilton’s LEVIATHAN, will have you on the edge of your seat. It will leave you gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement, all accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul.

Phoenix Dance Theatre is celebrating their 35th anniversary with a Triple Bill showcasing three master dance pieces…
Until.With/Out.Enough, an emotional abstract journey filled with intimacy, athletic power and tension.
Audience favourite, Melt sees the elements collide as dancers swoop and glide across the stage in a breathtaking mix of aerial dance.
Finally, the quirky and playful Bloom explores the darkly comic expressions of life and humanity.
