“There she blows!” Herman Melville’s seafaring masterpiece MOBY DICK is setting sail for Blackpool Grand Theatre on Tuesday 4 June & Wednesday 5 June. Don’t miss this literary classic gloriously captured on stage by the exciting theatre company Simple8.
In October,1839, the whaleboat Pequod is due to sail out of Nantucket and her skipper, Captain Ahab, is in need of a crew. Humble schoolmaster Ishmael is seeking fortune and adventure and ships aboard the vessel, finding himself joining a company charged with just one task: to wreak revenge on the white whale that lost Captain Ahab his leg – the infamous Moby Dick. Ahab’s single-minded pursuit ends up consuming Ishmael, the whole ship’s crew and the Pequod itself…
“It’s true. It’s all true for Moby Dick. He’s a killer, he’s a fury, he’s an angel of hell. Why if the white whale could talk, he’d talk like Ahab.”
Moby Dick was written in 1851 by American writer Herman Melville and was originally published to mixed reviews, selling fewer than 4,000 copies and was out of print at the time of the author’s death in 1891. It was not until the mid-20th century that the novel became recognised as one of the most important works of American fiction. Its opening sentence ‘Call me Ishmael’ is among the most famous in world literature.
The spirit and atmosphere of Melville’s classic novel – romantic, ambiguous, and rich with allegory – is beautifully captured on stage by the award-winning ensemble theatre company Simple8. Using some planks of wood, tattered sheets and an old accordion, the hunt for the most famous whale on earth is ingeniously brought to life.
Simple8 specialise in creating captivating worlds out of nothing – producing thrilling new plays that tackle big ideas using a variety of techniques from physical theatre, mime and live music and song to puppetry and magic. Moby Dick is transformed into a ‘ripping sea yarn’ packed with the novel’s original poetry and complete with stirring sea shanties!
