The Woman in Black is an acclaimed ghost story from Susan Hill. It tells the tale of lawyer Arthur Kipps, played by Daniel Radcliffe, discovering his client’s house is haunted. The ghost of a scorned woman, the Woman in Black, will catch Arthur in this mysterious and spine-chilling tale.

The Woman in Black is coming to Blackpool Grand Theatre from 31st October – 4th November 23.

Cotterstock Hall Near Oundle Village, Northamptonshire

“It is hard to imagine anywhere more apt for that all important first atmospheric sight of Eel Marsh House.” — Daniel Radcliffe

Exterior shots of the fictional Eel Marsh House were filmed in Northamptonshire’s Cotterstock Hall, located near Oundle village. The film crew spent four days on-scene dressing up the exterior for the three-day shoot. Even though it actually rained during shooting, a rain machine helped set the gloomy atmosphere so that the rain drops could show on film.

Surprisingly, one of the issues the team faced was the great condition the owners kept the house. The weeds, ivy, and other delapidated accessories you see in the film had to be added for the film.

Osea Island and Colne Valley Railway, Essex

Leading up to Eel Marsh House, what better setting than Osea Island to represent the fictional Nine Lives Causeway? Its perilous and dark atmosphere in addition to the surrounding salt marshes offered the ideal location. You can see this path linking Osea Island to the mainland in the film.

Award-winning Colne Valley Railway sets the railway scenes in which Arthur Kipps is seen travelling to the small market town. The interior scenes of the train were filmed at Mangapps Railway Museum in Burnham. The beautiful period carriage used in the film adds a lovely atmosphere to the film.

Halton Gill, Yorkshire Dales

Halton Gill is a complete gem of a village and was the ideal place to film the Crythin Gifford scenes for The Woman in Black.

– Daniel Radcliffe

Representing the fictional Crythin Gifford village, Halton Gill in the Yorkshire Dales was used even though the hamlet is miles away from the sea. In the original story, Crythin Gifford is located in salt marshes, but Halton Gill was chosen due to the absence of modern developments and due to how remote its location is.

Finding an area to film without modern developments proved to be a challenge for the team until they found this quaint hamlet in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales. Its homes are still the original centuries-old buildings, so all set designers needed was to create a police station from one of the houses’ exteriors.

Layer Marney Tower, Near Colchester, Essex

Viewed as one of the most haunted buildings in the UK, Layer Marney Tower is an imposing 16th-century Tudor building. Its commanding views over the beautiful landscapes of the area and of the River Blackwater offer the needed dramatic setting for the story.
